Definition of a Function Processor
- “PARLE '91” defines the function processor as “a wavefront array architecture, i.e., a regular structure of locally interconnected processing elements called Function Cells.” Each function cell is assigned execution of a single data element or graphical node. The functional processor performs its calculations as soon as all required functions are completed by the neighboring function cells.
- Functional processors represent an automated function. The computer kernel or the central processing unit delegates functions, analysis tasks or data processing to functional processors. Functional processors are assigned to a functional device within the computer’s CPU. Each CPU may have several functional processors. CPUs can use several functional processors at once to perform tasks in tandem.

Fully Functional Models are called FFMs. FFMs are used as the reference for the register transfer level model. Instruction Accurate Models simulate the execution of software code. Instruction Set Simulators simulate both the code execution and responses for computational units and other software kernels. “Chip-Hardware-in-the-Loop (CHILS) Framework” states, ”that means an ISS is a purely functional processor simulator.” Functional models can be run in modeling software to test computer chip and functional processor designs.
