Do Peas Need a Trellis?
- Peas grow on twining vines, 2 to 3 feet tall, or on low, bush-like plants. They prefer full sun and cool weather and produce continuously from spring until fall unless you allow the pods and peas to mature.
- Plant pea vine varieties an inch deep in moist, well-drained soil, about 2 inches apart. Plant the seeds on both sides of a trellis positioned from north to south so plants get equal shares of sunlight.
- Bush-like varieties may be actual bushes or low-growing vines that can partially support themselves. Plant these varieties about an inch deep and 1 to 4 inches apart in all directions in wide rows 1 to 2 feet wide.
