An Accident Waiting to Happen
Driving down the highway, I know you have seen it; that car up ahead.
For a while, it drives the speed limit, then it will slow down and you pass it.
In a few minutes, here it comes barreling past you at 15 or 20 miles above the posted limit.
Not a clue as to what the speed is or the traffic conditions.
A lot of times we will blame it on the cell phone.
They are probably just yakking away! You can't wait to find out.
Then next time you pass them-they are now going well below the speed limit- to your surprise NO cell phone.
That's just how they drive.
On top of that they hold the throttle open barreling down the highway and up ahead all of the traffic is slamming on brakes.
Does the source of your amusement slow down-no! They keep barreling down the highway.
All of a sudden you hear the tires squall! They have now realized the traffic has stopped.
The question is, will they stop before they hit something? They are an accident just waiting to happen! A lot of these observations apply to your practice.
Do you just ignore the obvious until it slaps you in the head? What about your privacy policy? Are you making sure it is being carried out? Are all of your patients signing the proper releases? When was the last time you did a cognitive walk through with your practice? What about the file room, is it kept locked and secured? And the drug closet, is it secure? Any syringes left out that could be a source of walking away on their own.
Are your computers password protected and set to log off if there is no activity within a reasonable amount of time.
What about your data backup? It must be done every day.
Once it is completed what happens to the backup.
Does it just sit there in the practice with the original? If so, it has provided little protection.
It must be removed from the premises to be of any value.
All of your records from medical billing are on a disc and they must be protected.
What about electronic medical records.
If you are using them, they too must be backed up and spirited away.
Add to the mix, now, with e-prescriptions.
Before another day goes by, take time to ensure your files are being properly backed up.
Test them to make sure you are getting what you should be getting? Do that walk through and make sure contaminated utensils are handled properly, that files are stored properly, that the drug closet is secured, that hallways are clear and exam rooms are maintained properly.
A little investment in time now will save a lot of headaches later.
Ensure that your practice is not an accident waiting to happen.
