1.
Your dog is a sensitive being and it is certainly not good, either for you or the dog, for you to shout at it.
Your dog needs to feel loved and you really must make the effort to make sure it knows that you love it.
It will want to come to you and behave.
Speak firmly if it is out of order, but do not shout, or you could end up with a neurotic dog.
2.
You should not overfeed your dog.
Everyone knows the effect being overweight has on humans - lack of energy, proneness to heart failure, diabetes etc.
The same goes for your dog.
You are not being kind to your dog if you overfeed it.
If it's tummy begins to look enlarged, cut the size of its meals.
3.
Be very careful about giving your dog leftovers.
Most dogs will eat whatever tidbits you give them, but you are not generally doing them any good at all.
You should feed them correct dog foods, complete mixes probably being the best.
Talk to your VET about your dog's diet.
Different breeds may require different foods.
4.
If you aren't prepared to take your dog out for a walk every day, whether it is sunny, raining, snowing, windy - whatever - don't have a dog.
The walk is the high spot of the dog's day.
Some small breeds need less exercise than larger ones, but you need to figure out from the characteristics of the breed how many times to take it out.
Dogs like dalmations or sleek hound like dogs such as pointers, setters, weimeraners etc.
require more strenuous exercise than some of the heavier breeds like golden retrievers, rotweilers, but these still need their walks.
Ex-racing greyhounds make excellent pets and don't need a lot of strenuous exercise, because they are sprinters, not distance runners.
5.
You may want to take your dog to the park to play.
It is really good to let your dog socialize with other dogs.
The worst thing you can do is put your dog on its lead as soon as you see another dog.
Let it go and meet other dogs, right from it being a puppy.
6.
I strongly recommend NOT throwing sticks for your dog to fetch.
There are many instances of the stick sticking in the ground and, when the dog rushes up to it, going down its throat.
It can kill your dog! Also, if you want to throw a ball, make sure it is too big for your dog to swallow - I speak from experience and a large vet's bill.
Don't overdo it and exhaust your dog 7.
It is a great thing for you to go to dog training classes.
These classes train you just as much as the dog.
They teach you how to treat you dog properly in order for it to be obedient.
8.
Your dog will love you unconditionally.
Make sure it knows how much you love IT.
You will get your rewards many times over.
All your dog wants from you is love, food and walks.
You will feel a sense of wellbeing that non-owners haven't a clue about.
It is said that having dogs can add several years to your life expectancy.
