Interior of the RK Begijnhof Kapel

106 48
Located at number 29, the RK Begijnhof Kapel (Roman Catholic Béguinage Chapel) started life in 1672 as a clandestine church where Catholics could practice their forbidden faith. These schuilkerken, as the Dutch call them, are a testament to this period and survive all over the Netherlands; there are four extant clandestine churches in Amsterdam alone, such as "Our Lord in the Attic", a former attic church opened to the public as the Museum Ons' Lieve Heer op Solder.

The architect of the church, Philip Vingboons, is responsible for several other Dutch Baroque landmarks in Amsterdam and nationwide, such as the one on Oude Turfmarkt 127 – now the location of the Allard Pierson Museum, the University of Amsterdam's antiquities museum.

The RK Begijnhof Kapel is open to visitors on Mon. 1 - 6:30 p.m., Tues. - Fri. 9 a.m. - 6:30 p.m., and Sat. - Sun. 9 a.m. - 6 p.m.
