How to Connect a Computer to a Home Security System
Things You'll Need
Instructions
1Place a video camera from the home security kit on a shelf or on the top of a bookcase. Connect the video camera's power supply to the camera and to a wall socket for power. Tape over the LED "On" light at the camera's front, if one is present, with a strip of duct tape. Aim the camera in the direction of the room that you want to monitor.
2
Screw one end of a coaxial cable into the coax output on the camera. Run the coaxial cable along the baseboard of the wall until you come to the computer
3
Screw the end of the coaxial cable into a coax input on the home security control module. Plug the USB cable attached to the home security control module into a USB port on the computer. Plug the module's power supply into the module and into a wall outlet for power.
4
Open the disc tray of the computer's DVD drive. Place the security system's installation disc on the tray, close the tray and double-click the icon when it appears on the desktop. Double-click the installation program inside the window that appears. Follow the menu commands to finish the installation. Restart the computer once the installation is finished.
5
Launch the home security program by selecting it from the "Start" menu and the "All Applications" pop-up menu. Click the "Preferences" tab on the program's main screen. Deselect the "Record" check box. Close the window by clicking its red "X" in the upper right corner.
6
Click on the "Options" tab at the top of the program's screen. Select "Install Wizard" or "Setup Wizard" from the drop-down menu -- the name may be a variation depending upon the program's developer. Select the icon of the camera on the screen. Click "Next." Drag the icon of the camera that is in the video window on the screen to the upper left corner. Click "Next." Watch the video from the camera in the upper left corner of the video window that is now on the program's main screen.
