Influence of Mosquito Control on Butterflies

    Reducing Breeding Sites

    • Mosquitoes breed and their larvae grow in stagnant water, so eliminating standing water sources in your yard is the most important method of controlling mosquito populations. Since butterflies lay eggs and their larvae grow on land, this important control method will not harm butterflies. To eliminate standing water source, overturn objects with pooled water inside such as kids' swimming pools, tarps, tires and wheelbarrows, clean out rain gutters and irrigate your lawn regularly and change the water in your bird bath at least once a week.

    Use of Bacillus Thuringiensis

    • Bacillus thurigiensis (Bt) is a type of bacteria found in soil that produces a crystal toxic to certain insects. Because Bt is a natural product, it is approved for use in organic gardens. Bt pellets and sprays can kill mosquito larvae without harming birds, fish or mammals, making it a useful control method for mosquito larvae in ponds. When controlling mosquito larvae, use Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti) sprays and pellets, which only kill the larvae of mosquitoes, fungus gnats and black flies. Bacillus thuringiensis kurstaki (Btk) will kill the larvae of butterflies and moths.

    Use of Pyrethrum

    • Chrysanthemum flower oil, called pyrethrum, is an active ingredient in many insecticidal aerosol sprays, fogs and misting systems. Homeowners should use pyrethrum as a last resort to control adult mosquitoes if larvae control proves unsuccessful. Pyrethrum sprays applied by professionals can harm mosquitoes as well as adult butterflies and other beneficial insects for four to six weeks. Non residual fogs, on the other hand, only remain in the environment for a short period of time, suppressing mosquitoes with little adverse affects on butterflies.

    Bug Zappers

    • Bug zappers are non-discriminating insect control systems which electrocute and kill any insects, including butterflies and mosquitoes, that fly or crawl into its light. These systems are ineffective at controlling pest insect populations and mostly kill harmless moths and beetles.

    Bug Repellents

    • Bug repellent candles, lotions and body sprays keep mosquitoes away from humans and target areas without killing them. DEET containing sprays are most effective at controlling mosquitoes, but candles, lotions and sprays containing citronella oil or lemon oil of eucalyptus will also repel the pests. Bug repellents allow humans to enjoy the outdoors without dealing with mosquitoes or harming any insects or wildlife.
