If you have a large family, an outdoor family reunion is often the practical solution when arranging the event. An indoor hall or banquet room, large enough to hold all your family members is typically more expensive than an outdoor venue, and may not be as enjoyable. When arranging an outdoor family reunion, consider the attributes of the prospective reunion site, as well as possible activities. - Hold your outdoor family reunion at a public park, a campground in the mountains or along the ocean on a sandy beach. When selecting the location of an outdoor family reunion, consider the time of year. Outdoor summer reunions aren't comfortable in desert regions or areas in the country experiencing seasonal humidity and mosquitoes. Before choosing an area, discover any seasonal weather problems you might encounter, such as lightning storms or wind storms. You may want to avoid high altitudes, for those family members with heart problems. Another consideration is ease of access to the site.
- Family reunions typically involve food. This might be a picnic, potluck, barbeque or catered meal. When selecting an outdoor reunion site, look for one with an area suitable for serving food, preferably a covered cabana. Some outdoor sites provide cooking areas, such as an outdoor kitchen or barbeque. If a portion of this area is under a roof, the food and family members have a dry spot to shelter in, should it happen to rain.
- If you have a large outdoor area, such as a roomy covered cabana or flat area suitable for a dance floor, arrange a group activity where most of the members can participate. Consider square dancing, suitable for family members of all ages and which won't require prior dance experience. Locate a square dance caller willing to work with a novice group. Those elder family members, who aren't up to dancing, will enjoy watching family members as they explore this group-like form of dancing. Every age group can participate, even the toddlers. This is an ideal activity for a western-themed family reunion.
- Relay races get the competitive juices flowing for family members, but don't take the activity too seriously. One way to avoid overzealous competition is to mix up the family members and arrange old-fashioned relay games, such as sack races, wheel barrel races or three-legged races. Instead of pairing father and son in the sack race, pair the son up with a cousin or uncle. Relay races are ideal for outdoor family reunions at parks or campsites. Print up some awards to hand out after the races.
