Rent Assistance in Texas
- Income eligibility criteria require that households must be at or below 50 percent of the median income guidelines developed by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
- While 25 percent of new households admitted to the program can make 31percent to 50 percent of the median, the remaining 75 percent must make 30 percent of the median or less.
- Once approved for assistance, beneficiaries are then approved for a specific rent amount based on family size and average rental prices in the area. The program will not pay more than this approved amount.
- Approved applicants can choose their own housing by looking for landlords in the areas that accept Section 8 vouchers. Properties must also be approved for the program. Landlords are paid directly by the program.
