Is green tea decaffeinated in its natural state? This question is asked by many who don't like the idea of drinking, or taking in any form for that matter, caffeinated products.

Green tea comes from the same plant that black tea comes from the Camellia sinensis plant that is widely grown in Asia. The leaves themselves do have caffeine in them as part of their natural component but green tea and black tea are treated differently hence the different levels in caffeine.

How Tea Is Processed

Two types of leaves can be used Camellia sinensis assamica, the most popular leaf for black tea and C. sinensis sinensis, which is a smaller leaf that is used for white and green tea. Tea is made by crushing tearing and rolling the leaves and then blowing air on them to dry them out. Black tea is then oxidized by keeping it in a controlled humid atmosphere until it is ready. When the tea is ready to answer the question is green tea decaffeinated? Yes it is but only by about 50% of that of black tea.
