Collection of Resources for Teaching Children About Music
- Online collections include the Children's Music Web Resource for Teachers (see References below). This site offers lesson plans and activities involving music than even non-music teachers can teach. It also offers suggestions for incorporating songs and rhythmic activities into non-music materials such as reading, math and history.
- Materials prepared by Kindermusik include collections of music for newborns through age 7. Kindermusik texts, activity guides, recordings and instruments get kids learning about melody, harmony, rhythm, dance and motion right away and can involve parents as well. Kindermusik's philosophy includes statements such as: "Music nurtures a child's cognitive, emotional, social, language, and physical development" and "Every child should experience the joy, fun, and learning that music brings to life."
- Kids' Music Round (KMR) also has collections of material for teaching children music. Similar to Kindermusik, kids can be very young to start benefiting from KMR lessons, which highly encourages parental involvement and parental teaching at home in between class meetings. KMR materials can be used for children up to 7 and can be adjusted for older children as well.
- The Children's Music Workshop (CMW), a resource for music education in all of its forms, includes articles on teaching music to children, how to choose an instrument with your child, sheet music and links to music camps and more. The CMW also sells band and orchestra curricula, offers a teacher locator and is an advocate for music education in public schools.
- Teaching music history is just as important as teaching practical musical skills. The American Musicological Society maintains a collection of book titles on music history for children that is a great starting place to educate your kids about the cultures and times different kinds of music come from.
