How to Insulate Drafts

    Windows and Doors

    • 1). Caulk around window and door frames, inside and out.

    • 2). Apply weather stripping around external door jambs. If a draft comes from under an external door, install a larger threshold, or use a long cylindrical cloth with stuffing that can be forced against the bottom of the door to blackout drafts.

    • 3). Insulate windows using appropriate method. Add storm window caulked across the top and sides (not the bottom; rain water needs to drain) to single-pane windows. Use a window insulation kit that applies to the interior of the window if installation of storm windows is not an option (like an apartment). These kits include double-sided tape and a roll of plastic. Adhere the plastic to the frame of the window with the tape, then use a hair dryer to shrink the plastic, giving an air tight seal.

    • 4). Use insulated drapes and close them before the sun hits the windows in the summer and close them before going to bed at night in the winter.

    Walls

    • 1). Insert thin foam insulation pads behind the face plate of wall switches and electric outlets. The foam pads are particularly useful on external walls where the electric boxes are more susceptible to drafts.

    • 2). Add blown-in insulation to walls through holes drilled in either the outside or inside of the house. Contractors that perform this task will typically repair the hole, but you might have to repaint the area.

    • 3). Install glass doors over a fireplace opening because the flue might not completely block drafts.
