Enjoyed for its white, flaky texture and soft flavor, cod is one of the most consumed fish in the United States. There are numerous varieties of cod, but most share proclivities that can make catching them easy. Cod is known to be finicky, but it is a lazy fish, so catching it can take a little work. However, with a few simple techniques can find and catch cod without great difficulty. - Cod have large mouths and are not particular about food, so a wide array of baits will work. Live bait, such as razor clams and grubs will work in most cases, as will artificial worms. Cod often eat decaying carcasses, so stink bait like aged fish or stink jellies can help lure them in.
- Cod love deep water, but they do not rest on the sea floor, so it is important to use weights called sinkers. To use a sinker, you must attach the bait or lure to the end of the line, with the weighted sinker attached a few feet above. As you drop the line into the water, the sinker will carry it to the bottom. As the weight rests on the sea floor, the buoyant lure will float up above the sea floor where the cod like to swim.
- Cod are lazy fish that will eat anything in front of them, but they aren't known to chase moving bait. Because of this tendency, it is in your interest to keep the boat as stationary as possible. To help keep the boat static with the wind and current that are nearly always present on the water, consider using a drift sock. Helpful in creating drag, drift socks are attach to the rear of the boat and dropped in the water where they help slow movements that can shift baited lines.
