- In order to be a substitute teacher in California, you must have a four-year degree from an accredited institution. You must provide an official copy of your school transcript to the California Commission on Teacher Counseling as proof of your degree. In addition, you must pass the California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST). The CBEST covers basic skills in reading, writing and mathematics. It is available at multiple testing centers statewide.
- Every substitute teacher in California must fill out an application packet. You must include a completed application form 41-4 (see Resources), relevant supporting documentation -- like college transcripts -- processing fee ($55 as of February 2011) and a copy of the Request for Live Scan Service (see Resources). The LiveScan Service is proof that you have had your fingerprints taken and paid the fingerprint processing fee. Out-of-state applicants can substitute two fingerprint cards, available by calling 888-921-2682.
- Every substitute teacher must have their fingerprints taken in order to work in California public schools. The Live Scan form must be completed by a Live Scan operator. To find a Live Scan operator in your area, visit the State of California Department of Justice's Applicant Live Scan website (see Resources). Locations include police departments, sheriff's departments and notaries public. Fees for completing the Live Scan service will vary depending on which service you choose.
- If you complete the aforementioned requirements, you can work as a substitute teacher for up to one year with a maximum amount of time of 30 days in any one classroom. You'll need to reapply after one year. Individual school districts may set their own requirements for open positions; check with your local school district for open positions and application requirements. Some school districts employ substitute teachers directly, while other districts may use temp agencies.
