Poisons

• Many science labs use live or deceased animals in the course of study. The best way to avoid injury due to poison is to avoid contact with skin by wearing latex gloves. If poison does come in contact with the skin, wash the area with soap and warm water for one to two minutes.
  
  

Infectious Agents

• If infectious agents are used in a school lab, be sure to always avoid contact with hands by using protective gloves. Also, be very diligent about sterilizing all lab equipment, ideally with an autoclave or similarly thorough cleaning machine.
  
  

Flammable, Explosive or Radioactive materials

• In a chemistry lab, in particular, it is crucial to always know the dangers and risks of the materials you are working with. Even common chemicals in a laboratory may be dangerous when combined. Learn about the chemicals you are using to find out what they cannot be mixed with.
  
  

Moving Machinery

• Lab equipment may have moving parts that could entangle fingers, hands, or loose clothing. Always be mindful when near moving machinery, such as a centrifuge, that could catch body parts or clothing items.
  
  

Extreme Temperatures

• Extreme heat and cold often play important roles in speeding or slowing down chemical reactions. Never allow body parts or loose clothing to get close to fire. Also, avoid exposing bare skin to extremely hot or cold materials or machinery by wearing rubber or fabric protective gear.
