- 1). Determine what type of moped scooter you want to buy by reading reviews on websites such as Review Centre. If you are purchasing a used moped scooter for commuting and lack a motorcycle license, you will want to look at 50cc moped scooters. CC stands for the "cylinder capacity" of the scooter, and more ccs mean more speed.
- 2). Visit a website that sells moped scooters such as Moped Army, Moped2.org or WheelByNet.com. On Moped2.org, for example, visit the Moped Marketplace. Click on "Mopeds for Sale" to view the listings of used moped scooters. On Moped Army, you can view the "Shop Links" page, and on WheelByNet.com, check out the "Motorcycles and ATVs" tab at the top to start your search.
- 3). Check with parts stores such as JC Whitney to see if parts are available for the moped scooter you are interested in purchasing. With older moped scooters you want to make sure that you will be able to find replacement parts in case any repairs need to be done to the moped scooter.
- 4). Look up the value of the used moped scooter that you are interested in buying. You can do this on the Kelly Bluebook (KBB) website. You will select motorcycle values, then retail value and select the year, make and model to get an idea of the value. This is important to make sure that you do not overpay for your used moped scooter.
- 5). Inspect the used moped scooter before you buy it if you can. Give it a test drive to see how it runs. Look for rust on the gas tank that could cause holes in the tank later on. Check out the tires to see if they would need replaced once you purchase the bike.
- 6). Make sure to use any flaws as a negotiation point when you are ready to buy. Ask how much work has been done on it to see whether there are mostly original parts. This will give you an idea of how much work you may have to put into it in the near future.
- 7). Verify how the used moped scooter that you are buying will be delivered. If a dealer is selling the scooter, it may come on a large truck. However, the seller may be doing a pick-up only for the sale. Be sure to verify this critical detail before purchasing the used moped scooter.
