Question: Can I Make Low Calorie Guacamole?

I love eating guacamole, but I am not sure if it fits into my low calorie plan. Can I make low calorie guacamole?

Answer:

Making low calorie guacamole is not an easy thing to do. Afterall, the main ingredient in guacamole is avocado. Avocado is not low in calories! In fact, every one cup of cubed avocado contains about 240 calories, and the majority of these calories comes from fat.

The great thing is that the fat in avocado is the healthy kind, so you don't have to feel to much guilt when you eat it in moderation. Given that information, making a low calorie guacamole isn't really feasible if you want it to taste authentic. However, many recipes call for additions to the avocado that aren't really necessary, and can make the guacamole less healthy than it could be. Additions such as sour cream and mayonnaise are common, but not needed. The fats in both these ingredients are generally saturated fats, or unhealthy fats.

Instead, make your guacamole the healthy way by using fresh, ripe avocado, chopped tomato, fresh cilantro, a bit of garlic, lime juice, ground cumin, and salt. Nothing else is needed, and eaten in moderation this guacamole can easily be a part of a healthy low calorie diet.
