Weaknesses of Self-Employment

103 29
The Downside in Being Self-Employed To many people self-employment sounds like a perfect job.
Creating your own hours, working the days that you want to work, unfortunately it is not all that it is cracked up to be.
The truth about self-employment is that you have to be your own boss.
You need self-discipline, and motivation to get yourself out in to the community to find steady employment.
If you do not find work, then you will be without income.
When you are working for a company they usually provide benefits to an employee.
When you work for yourself or you own your own business it is not likely that you have these benefits, such as: 401K, medical and dental insurance, paid holidays, a pension, and unemployment benefits if you are without work for a long time.
You will not receive pay for any missed days or days off of work, and it will in fact cost you money to take a day off of work.
Losing Money from Being Self-Employed Being self-employed means long hours after working your normal work day, and having to do a lot of things that a company would normally hire another individual to take care of, things like: accounting, billing, marketing, invoices, legal aspects, and much more.
A lot of times you have to put forth your own money to start up your business, which means taking a substantial loss if it fails.
The IRS charges small businesses and self-employed people a lot more in taxes than say a normal employee of a company.
If your business is not thriving, then chances are you are either barely making it by financially, or you are losing money.
It takes a long time for a self-employed person to build up a database of customers/clients, causing it to be very hard in the first couple years to turn a profit.
The Downside to Working from Home If you work from home, that could add additional stresses to your work day.
It may be much harder for you to focus on what you are working on, and may also cause unwanted distractions.
Also when working from home you do not have a drive back from your office to your house, leaving you no time to shift your train of thought from your work day to your home life.
A major issue when working from home is self-discipline.
If you are distracted with checking your emails or chatting on Facebook it can be very difficult to dedicate yourself to your work.
If you work from home, chances are you will not get to socialize with co-workers like you would in an office setting.
Small Business Competition Not to mention there is always going to be competition in your line of work, regardless of what your career choice is.
This makes it very hard for a small business owner or self-employed persons to compete with them.
You do not have the resources or the money to try to compete with a bigger business that has been established for many years.
Self-employment is not for everybody, if you cannot take the bad with the good then you will not be able to do it.
