    • 1). Work on shooting technique. With a 12-year old girl it is important to teach the finer parts of the shot. Concentrate of being balanced, with your shooting elbow tucked in, eyes on the rim and a high follow through. Start by shooting from about five feet from the basket. Emphasize the process of shooting the ball correctly instead of the result. The ball will begin to go in the basket more consistently if the basic form is executed correctly.

    • 2). Practice the dribbling fundamentals. Work one hand at a time starting with the dominant hand. For a right-handed player, begin by dribbling in place. Concentrate on keeping the ball below the knees and controlling it with the fingertips. Make sure the head is up and the eyes are looking straight forward. The knees and back should be slightly flexed so that the player is in an athletic position. Add in dribbling on the move with the dominant hand. Slowly start walking the ball down the court. As the player becomes more advanced she can begin to jog or even run. Take the time to work on dribbling with both hands.

    • 3). Work on passing skills. The three types of passes that a 12-year old girl needs to know are the chest pass, bounce pass and over-the-head pass. The player should stand 10 feet from a wall or a partner. They should execute each of the passes concentrating on the fundamentals. A chest pass should be thrown outward from the chest and hit the other player in their chest. A bounce pass is thrown from the chest towards the ground. The ball should bounce off of the ground and hit the other player in the chest area. An over-the-head pass is thrown by holding the ball above the head with two hands and passing it towards the other players head area. These passes can easily be mastered with consistent work.
