How to Transplant Phlox Subulata
- 1). Select a spot for the transplanted Phlox subulata. Creeping phlox will tolerate nearly any type of soil and will thrive in either full sunlight or partial shade. Spade the area to a depth of 6 to 8 inches. If the site doesn't drain well, work in 2 to 4 inches of compost or rotten manure.
- 2). Dig up the clump of phlox to be transplanted. Use a garden fork or a shovel to dig around the clump. Lift the clump of phlox from the ground, working carefully to avoid disturbing the roots more than necessary.
- 3). Plant the phlox in the prepared area immediately, otherwise keep the plant cool and moist until you can plant it in the new location. Dig a hole wider than the clump root system but no deeper. Place the plant in the hole at the same soil depth at which it was previously planted.
- 4). Water the transplanted phlox immediately, then water regularly until new growth appears. After that time, water the phlox during periods of hot, dry weather.
- 5). Spread 2 to 4 inches of organic mulch such as pine needles or dry grass clippings around the phlox plant. Mulch will protect the roots during the coming winter, and will retain moisture and control weeds.
