What is on your Bucket List?

So much to do, so little time

Recently I talked about a trip I had taken and a friend said visiting the destination was on their "Bucket List".  A Bucket List is a list you make of things you want to do before you die or ‘kick the bucket' The slang has been long used but recently The Bucket List movie brought the term from a vague notion to a ‘must do‘.  Books like 1000 Places to See Before You Die make readers think they are missing something, that  they better start making a list or checking off a list someone else has created.  Putting a notion of death in a title sure suggest a sense of urgency. People are more goal-oriented, organized and publicized than ever so I see more and more people posting their ‘bucket list' to a Blog or Facebook.

Goal setting is a way to accomplish more and visualization is a proven key to success. Writing things down make them more real and can turn large goals into manageable tasks.

"Bucket Lists" might be things you think you want to accomplish because you feel your own mortality closing the door on you. We are all going to die... but when we think it may be sooner than later it prompts us to take action.  Maybe you feel insecure about your life and make a list of things to gauge if you are on-track and where you need to get busy.  I ticked off some of my list before I knew there was going to be a term coined for the process. I was never concerned with the check marks, just the experiences:  hike the Grand Canyon visit The Louvre, dive The Great Barrier Reef- sure, I did them but I thought they were just things I wanted to do "someday".

My life goals and I suppose most people's ‘list' changes over time. Some things you have done, some you have let go of- and well, some you may just not want to do anymore. It is probably okay to change ‘take a submarine to the Titanic' to ‘take a Mediterranean cruise. At one time I might have wanted to attend Le Cordon Bleu cooking school in Paris, now I just want to eat there.

How you want to approach your list is personal. The goals can be great or small. I have seen some that include only what might be possible (see a Broadway show) and some that are pretty fantastical (go to Mars). Great lists aren't limited to travel. Yours might say: Start my own business, join the Peace Corps or find and marry the love of my life. It is all about focusing on how you would like to design your life.

Not everyone wants to run with the bulls in Spain or climb Mt. Everest. But most of the lists I have come across seem to be fueled by adventure. I notice a lot more people say ‘travel around the world' than ‘become a millionaire'.

Looking around the Internet I have compiled the most popular goals into an unofficial Top Ten Bucket List:

1. Defy Gravity: Go Skydiving, Travel to Space
2. Swim with Sharks
3. Write a book
4. Read the classics
5. Make a pilgrimage: to Rome, to Jerusalem- Stonehenge or Machu Pichu
6. Volunteer: Give Back
7. Go on an African Safari
8  Learn a Foreign Language
9. Lose weight:  go on a diet, lose __ pounds/kgs
10. Run a Marathon; complete a triathlon

Is there something you want to achieve before you die? Some place you want to go or something you must see?
