    Signs

    • There are many signs that a plant might be water logged. First of all, if the plant is located in resting water, this is a major indication that the plant is most likely water logged and could die. If the plant is a potted plant, and the plant feels heavier than normal, this is a sign that the plant is holding too much water and is water logged. Also, the roots of a water logged plant, most often become rotted. This sign, however, is difficult to notice unless you suspect water logging and check the roots.

    Disease

    • If the plant does not die from being water logged, it most likely will be affected by disease. This is because the conditions that cause water logging are also ideal for plant disease growth. Some common diseases that affect water logged plants include fungal diseases and phytopthora.

    Fruits and Vegetables

    • Fruit and vegetable plants can also be harmed by water log. If the fruits and vegetable plants begin to yellow due to the water log, the produce is inedible and should be thrown away. If the water that is harming the plant may contain sewage or animal manure, it should also be discarded. Leafy vegetables, such as lettuce and cabbage should always be thrown out if it has been in resting water. Other vegetables, such as tomatoes and peppers, are normally safe to eat; however, be sure to wash the vegetables very well before consuming.

    Prevention and Repair

    • If a plant has become water logged, it can be removed and dried out by laying it on dry newspaper. Then any slimy, or darker colored portions of the roots should be cut off. To prevent water logging in plants, provide them with a better drainage system. This can be done by adding rocks or broken pieces of clay into the potted plant or landscaping where the plant is located.
