    • 1). Look up an enrolled agent by logging on to the National Association of Enrolled Agents website at NAEA.org. Click on "Find an Enrolled Agent" in the menu on the left side of the screen. You can search based on your geographic area or by specialty within the tax code. Examples of specialties include military, domestic partnerships, small businesses, partnerships and trusts and estates.

    • 2). Schedule a meeting with an enrolled agent. The enrolled agent should listen to your specific situation and offer a frank assessment of her expertise in your particular situation and ability to help you.

    • 3). Examine qualifications. All enrolled agents must complete at least 72 hours of continuing education every three years in order to keep their status as enrolled agents.
