    HUD-VASH

    • The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Veteran Affairs Supported Housing Program, or HUD-VASH, provides housing assistance payments for homeless veterans. Twenty thousand Section 8 vouchers have been allocated to qualified veterans to obtain permanent housing. To qualify for the program, the veteran must lack an adequate nighttime residence. The veteran is required to participate in case management and supportive services to ensure that he can maintain his housing and independent lifestyle.

Supportive Services for Veteran Families Program

    • The Supportive Services for Veteran Families program provides temporary financial aid for qualified veteran families to secure housing. Aid can be used toward the first month's rent, security deposits and transportation. The veteran family's income cannot exceed 50 percent of the area's median income. The veteran must be the head of household for the family to qualify for help. The family can also receive help with child care, health care and daily living services.

    VA Loan

    • Veterans, active duty military and National Guard service members are eligible to obtain a VA loan to purchase a house. The service member must obtain a certificate of eligibility that proves military service to be approved for a VA loan. VA loans require no down payment, and closing costs can be structured into the loan. The county in which the home is located determines the loan limit the veteran can qualify up to. The purchased home must be the veteran's primary place of residence.

    Specially Adapted Housing Grant

    • The Specially Adapted Housing grants are for veterans who have a service-related disability. Veterans are able to receive up to $63,780, as of January 2011, for help with rehabilitating their home. Funds can be used toward installing wheelchair ramps, widening doorways or hallways for wheelchair access, installing hardwood floors or other modifications. The veteran can apply for the grant at the local VA office. A notice of eligibility will be sent to the veteran providing him with a disability rating. A Specially Adapted Housing counselor will visit the home and provide the veteran with guidance on using the grant funds.
