The Feeling of Freedom

Musical legend, Nina Simone, sings "I wish I knew how it would feel to be free, I wish I could break all of the chains holding me, I wish I could say all the things that I should say, Say 'em loud say 'em clear for the whole round world to hear. I wish I could share all the love that's in my heart remove all the bars that keep us apart, I wish you could know what it means to be me, then you'd see and agree that every man should be free."

It is one of the most beautiful and moving songs. Freedom is a difficult thing to achieve, and for some it is near impossible. Why? Because they live in oppressive environments that are almost impossible to break out of. For others, it may be achievable but it will have to come from a sense of self, a true understanding and accepting of who you are and the confidence to live the way you want to live, the way you have the potential to live.

So what is freedom really? I suppose it is a different feeling for everyone. For some it might be:

Kissing with conviction:

When you've met someone and you know they are the right person. You're with them and you know it's the right moment. Then you can really kiss them. Kiss them in a way that means something. Where you lose yourself in the moment, where the world melts around you and nothing else matters. For some, that is freedom.

Journeying out on your own:

Getting off an airplane in a land you've never been before, in a place where you know no one, you don't speak the language or even know which way is north. Finding a place to stay, people to talk to, and your next destinations can make you feel like you are finding your path amongst a big world that you are one of 7 billion in. This sense of anonymity combined with purpose, for some, feels a lot like freedom.

Flying:

Being surrounded by nature is a good reminder of how little we are as humans. That the natural world is much bigger than our world, that it has the ability to completely devour us if it wants to. Standing on the top of a mountain and taking a deep breath of fresh air before skiing down through tumbles of powder, kayaking through rapids, or soaring through the air in a hot air balloon and looking down at the great world beneath you - that might feel a little like freedom.

Freedom means something different for everyone. What does it mean for you?
