Carnivals in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
- Philly Carnival (phillycarnival.com) is a celebration of West Indies culture and art forms. This weekend event occurs in June. Some of Philly Carnival's featured attractions are live Caribbean-themed music, costume contests and food vendors from local West Indies restaurants in greater Philadelphia. The Philadelphia Multi-cultural Carnival Association sponsors the event.
- Hosted by the University of Pennsylvania, the Penn Relay Carnival (thepennrelays.com) is an amateur track and field sports event featuring athletes from around the world. Boys and girls in high school and college may participate in this three-day event. Penn Relay usually happens during the last weekend of April. This carnival occurs at the University's Franklin Field. Penn Relay--dating back to 1895--is one of the oldest relay carnivals in the United States.
- The annual Philly Craft Beer Festival (phillycraftbeerfest.com) happens on South Broad Street in the Philadelphia Naval Complex. Forbes Traveler lists this festival as one of the "Top 10 Beer Festivals in America." Philly Craft Beer Festival is a one-day event, usually held on the first weekend of March. Festival attendees have opportunities to sample locally brewed beers from throughout the United States. Complimentary shuttle service is available for festival attendees to the Naval Complex from the Broad and Pattison metro transit station.
- During the fall, Philadelphia hosts the Philly Fringe Live Arts Festival, which features live shows from national and international performance troupes. The festival's performances includes Shakespeare plays, modern dance, magic shows and stand-up comedy. Philly Fringe happens over the course of 16 days. The festival's Live Arts Brewery, or LAB, program features experimental theater.
- The Philadelphia International Dragon Boat Festival (philadragonboatfestival.com) is an annual dragon boat racing competition on the Delaware River. Most participants in the race are local Philadelphia or Pennsylvanian citizens. Each boat has approximately 25 passengers. The majority of the boat's passengers are paddlers. This festival usually happens on the first Saturday morning of October. The Dragon Boat Festival allows people of all ages to participate.
- Philadelphia jazz music enthusiasts have access to the West Oak Lane Jazz and Arts Festival, an annual event held in mid-June. This weekend event occurs on Philadelphia's Ogontz Avenue--located in North Philadelphia--and features jazz ensembles, reggae performers, and rhythm and blues singers. The Festival also has photography, jewelry, arts and fashion design exhibitions.
