How to Protect Small Trees From Deer
- 1). Remove chalaza from a couple of cartons of eggs. Chalaza is a thin white ropy piece of membrane that helps keep yolks together. When placed in deer repellent mixture and used in a spray bottle, chalaza will clog up the spray bottle.
- 2). Mix up 20 percent eggs and 80 percent water to make your own deer repellent. Pour the mixture into a spray bottle.
- 3). Spray the top third of the tree with the mixture. Choose a dry day to apply the deer repellent, so it has time to dry. Reapply the deer repellent every 30 days.
- 4). Walk around the perimeter of your yard and spray a commercial area deer repellent. Temperatures must be above freezing for the area repellent to work.
- 5). Reapply the area deer repellent in a few days or according to the directions. Reapply the repellent after it rains.
- 6). Place a motel bar of soap into a plastic apple bag and hang off of trees with a clothes pin. Deer try to steer clear to the smell of soap.
