Instructions for Wiring Electric Switches
- 1). Twist an orange wire connector onto the two white wires, connecting them together inside the switch box. Connect the two bare copper wires together the same way, using an orange connector. Push both sets of wires into the back of the electrical switch box.
- 2). Wrap one black wire around one screw on the right side of the single-pole switch. Wrap the remaining black wire around the remaining screw on the right side of the single-pole switch. Tighten both screws to hold the wires securely to the single-pole switch.
- 3). Push the single-pole switch into the electrical box and connect it at the top and the bottom of the box with screws provided with the switch. Cover the single-pole switch with a cover plate.
- 1). Find the two cable sets inside the first three-way switch box. The first cable set consists of a black, white and bare copper wire. The second cable set consists of a black, red, white and bare copper wire.
- 2). Connect the white wires from the first cable set and the second cable set together by twisting an orange wire connector onto the wires. Repeat this connection for the bare copper wires from the first and second cable sets. Push these wires into the back of the three-way switch box.
- 3). Wire the first three-way switch on the circuit by connecting the red wire to the screw on the left side of the switch. Connect the black wire from the first cable set to the common screw on the right side of the switch. The common screw is labeled as COM on the back of the three-way switch. Connect the black wire from the second cable set to the remaining screw on the right side of the switch, and connect the switch to the electrical box at the top and the bottom of the box.
- 4). Wire the second three-way switch on the circuit by connecting the red wire to the screw on the left side of the three-way switch. Connect the black wire to the COM screw on the right side of the switch and connect the white wire wrapped in black electrical tape to the remaining screw on the right side of the switch. Connect the bare copper wire to the green ground screw on the switch and push the switch into the electrical box, attaching it at the top and the bottom of the box.
- 5). Cover both three-way switches with single-gang switch cover plates.
- 1). Find and identify the two cable sets inside the four-way switch box. The first cable set consists of a black, red, white and bare copper wire, and the second cable set consists of a black, red, white and bare copper wire. Connect the two bare copper wires from both cable sets together by twisting an orange wire connector onto both wires. Repeat this connection with the two white wires from both cable sets.
- 2). Wrap the red wire from the first cable set around the top screw on the right side of the four-way switch. Wrap the red wire from the second cable set around the remaining screw on the right side of the switch. Wrap the black wire from the first cable set around the top screw on the left side of the switch, and wrap the black wire from the second cable set around the remaining screw on the left side of the switch. Tighten all four screws to hold the wires to the switch.
- 3). Push all the wires back into the four-way switch box and connect the switch to the top and the bottom of the electrical box. Cover the four-way switch with a single-gang switch cover plate.
- 1). Connect the two white wires together inside the switch box by twisting an orange wire connector onto both wires. Connect the green wire from the dimmer switch to the two bare copper wires inside the switch box by twisting a red wire connector onto all three wires.
- 2). Connect one black wire inside the switch box to one black wire from the dimmer using an orange wire connector. Connect the remaining black wire from the switch box to the remaining black wire from the dimmer using another orange wire connector.
- 3). Push all the wires inside the switch box and connect the switch at the top and the bottom of the box with screws provided with the dimmer. Cover the dimmer switch with a single-gang cover plate designed to fit the dimmer switch.
