• Ask to see previous work; anyone worth their fee will be able to provide you with some samples of their most recent work; demand that the examples they send you are recent so you can tell what the current quality is like

• Try and get someone that has shot at the venue you have chosen before; they may even be able to re-use footage they have previously shot at the venue.
  
• Make sure your wedding insurance covers any no shows!
