Dry Skin - 3 Top Tips That Work
Having spent many years suffering with dry skin, I am well aware of the tightness, pain and itchiness it causes.
When your skin is so dry that it starts to crack and sting, is when you know that you really need to do something about it.
Finally I managed to overcome my dry skin problem.
Here are the 3 key tips that worked for me.
1.
Look at the products you use to wash yourself.
Most soaps and shower gels are too harsh for your dry skin.
They can strip away your skin's natural oils leaving the skin extremely dry.
We have all probably been guilty at some time of choosing our soaps and gels by the way they smell and the packaging they come in.
To combat dry skin requires a different approach to choosing the products we use.
Look for "fragrance free" products that contain a high level of natural active ingredients.
Avoid using those harsh products that produce lots of moisture sapping lather.
2.
Reduce the amount of time you spend bathing and reduce the temperature of the water.
Everyone who has suffered from dry skin will know that craving to turn the temperature of the shower up to get that instant feel good factor on the skin.
This is probably the worst thing you can do and will only irritate the skin further.
If you shower or bathe twice a day, try cutting it down to once a day.
If you spend 20 minutes in the shower or bath, try reducing it to 5 to 10 minutes.
Most importantly turn the temperature of the water down.
It does not have to be cold, warm is fine, but at all costs avoid hot water.
3.
Once you have finished showering or bathing it is essential that you moisturise your skin with the right products and in the correct way.
I always used to step out of the shower and vigorously dry myself with a towel until totally dry, and then applied one of the many moisturiser I tried over the years.
The first mistake was rubbing my skin with the towel, rather than patting the skin which is less irritating.
The second mistake was totally drying the skin, rather than leaving it slightly damp to moisturise.
By applying the moisturiser to damp skin, it helps lock in the moisture, keeping the skin soft and supple.
My third mistake was choosing the wrong type of moisturiser.
Products that contain artificial fragrances, SD Alcohol, Ethyl Alcohol and Alcohol Denat are irritating and drying to the skin.
So by choosing a fragrance free moisturiser, high in natural active ingredients completed the transformation.
These 3 tips are very easy to implement but do require a daily discipline to work.
They have proved to be the cornerstone of overcoming dry skin for myself.
