    'Country of Origin' Regulation

    • The case brought against United States-based Internet giant Yahoo! involving selling goods over the Internet set a precedence of determining which country's laws are applicable to a site. Yahoo's French site was selling Nazi memorabilia in France where the sale of such items are banned. The French courts made Yahoo! liable under French law. Since then, regulations have been revised to adapt to the concept of "Country of Origin," so that the laws of the country of which a site is established applies, protecting e-business owners from having to comply with laws from all around the world.

    Domain Regulation

    • The Internet has regulations to protect e-business domains from cyber-squatters who register company domain names for the purpose of selling domains to another company for profit. In the U.S. a domain name can be protected under the Anticybersquatting Consumer Protection Act (ACPA). In addition, an e-business with a trademark can flag its domain with a registered trademark logo.

    Digital Rights Management Regulation

    • Regardless of the copyright laws of downloading material, illegal use became prominent for movies and music. With the challenges of enforcing regulations in the industry, digital rights management (DRM) was developed with technology to limited use for downloads. The technology itself became the regulator against unlawful copying. As an added benefit, DRM not only protects the site but also increases the site's value.

    Distance-Selling Regulation

    • With e-business, a consumer cannot see or try physical goods before she purchases it. Regulations to protect a consumer from purchasing an unsatisfactory product falls under the Consumer Protection Regulation 2000, also known as "Distance Selling." It protects consumers with the right to examine the goods or services being offered and the option to cancel as long as the goods are returned in the condition they were found.
