How to Install a Floor Receptacle in Old Construction
- 1). Locate the position of the floor receptacle from your basement. Place the gang box against the bottom of the floor next to a floor joist and then trace the box on the floor with a pencil.
- 2). Drill a one-half-inch hole up through the floor in all four corners of the box you traced onto the floor. This creates the relief you need for the saw.
- 3). Cut out the rectangle shape with a reciprocating saw. Stay as close to the line as you can.
- 4). Place the gang box down into the hole and secure it by driving a nail through the hole in the side of the box into the joist with a hammer.
- 5). Run your wires from the electrical panel to the gang box. As a note, make sure the breaker for the electrical circuit is turned off. Feed the wires up through the gang box so you can reach them.
- 6). Connect the wires to the electrical outlet. The green wire goes to the grounding lug on the gang box or on the outlet. The black wire goes to the in-feed lug and the white wire goes to the return or out-feed lug.
- 7). Secure the outlet to the gang box and then install the cover plate.
