How to Tie Crappie Hair Jigs
- 1). Attach a lead head crappie jig to the jaws of your fly tying vise. Position the hook so that the jaws are holding the bend of the hook with the point and barb on the bottom.
- 2). Place the thread in the bobbin so it is ready for use. Make several wraps with the thread around the neck of the jig. The neck is the section of the jig head between the round head and the bait keeper point.
- 3). Select a clump of animal hairs. Hold the hairs between your thumb, index and middle finger and trim one end with scissors so that the hairs are even.
- 4). Place the hairs around the shank of the hook. The even end of the hairs should be up against the base of the jig head. Wrap the thread around the hairs to secure them in place.
- 5). Continue wrapping the thread around the hairs all along the neck of the jig to form a body. Tie the thread off with with two over hand knots. Cut the thread with scissors and apply a small amount of clear nail polish to the thread as a sealant.
