Florida Property Grants
- Grants are available to purchase land and construct, renovate or improve community and public facilities in urban and rural areas of Florida. The U.S. Department of Agriculture, or USDA, sponsors the Community Facilities Grant Program, which awards grants for construction projects in towns, districts and municipalities with less than 20,000 residents. In cities and counties with over 50,000 and 200,000 residents respectively, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, or HUD, sponsors the Community Development Block Grant program. Grants are used to construct and rehabilitate neighborhood centers, water and sewer systems and roads.
- Public housing authorities, PHAs, as well as rental property owners and low-income homeowners are able to apply for grants through Florida's HUD and USDA federal offices to construct, renovate or repair homes. PHAs apply for grants to build public housing units through the HUD's HOPE VI and Public Housing Capital Fund programs. Urban neighborhoods in Florida that suffered an abundance of foreclosures and home abandonment due to the recession and housing market collapse are eligible for financial assistance through HUD's Neighborhood Stabilization Program. Low-income homeowners and rental property owners whose housing units are occupied by low-income tenants are eligible to apply for grants to repair their properties through the USDA's Housing Preservation Grant program. Senior homeowners 62 years of age and older who cannot afford loans but need to remove health and safety hazards from their homes are eligible for grants through the Very Low-Income Housing Repair Program. Both of these USDA grants are available to property owners in Florida's rural areas.
- Agricultural producers and land owners in Florida needing financial assistance with irrigation systems, preventing and containing soil erosion, and housing construction can apply for grants through the USDA in Tallahassee, the state capital. Some of the available grant programs include the Emergency Conservation Program, Farm Labor Housing Loans and Grants Program, and the Conservation Reserve.
- Florida health care facilities that need renovations, modifications or upgrades can have them paid for through grants from the state's office of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, or HHS, and Department of Veterans Affairs, or VA. The HHS funds the Health Care and Other Facilities and Community Health Centers programs, while the VA sponsors programs for military veterans. The Grants to States for Construction of State Home Facilities authorizes the construction and renovation of facilities providing hospital, nursing and domiciliary care for veterans in Florida.
