Great Birthday Ideas for Disabled Infants
- Birthday party ideas can be modified based on a child's strengths as well as weaknesses.Birthday party image by DXfoto.com from Fotolia.com
Throwing a party for a disabled infant can be similar to any party for children of a similar age. Take into consideration the infant's interests, likes, dislikes, abilities, limitations and sensitivities. Infants explore the world through taste, touch, sound, smell, and sight. Michael Meyerhoff, EDD, says "in many cases, a child's abilities can be improved by stimulating the impaired sense." Play and have fun with all five senses. - Bright colors and drawing are appropriate activities.drawing with crayons image by Renata Osinska from Fotolia.com
Colors can be used in the party food, decorations, gifts and games. If the child has a favorite color, consider using that color thematically. Or use many colors to create rainbow desserts or art projects. Painting, drawing and movie watching all can encompass a variety of colors. There are many movies geared for infants that have shapes, colors and movement to excite infants and children. - Engaging sounds can be found in nature.singing female indigo bunting image by Marion Olthoff from Fotolia.com
If the infant enjoys listening to new sounds draw attention to the sounds outside, on the computer or in books. Interesting sounds can be heard from animals, vehicles, nature, songs, and poetry. Sing songs, repeat nursery rhymes, listen to chirping birds or ocean waves. Point out all of these noises.
Also, clapping games can be done by many disabled infants. The combination of touch and sound creates an exhilarating game. - Many textures can be explored.the amazed boy to sit on white blanket image by Valentin Mosichev from Fotolia.com
Lay out several textured fabrics or toys. Use anything soft, thick, scratchy, coarse, smooth, silky, or bumpy to engage the infant in touching and feeling the fabrics and toys. Always make sure the items are safe for small children. Toys that can be pulled, twisted, bit, stroked, and banged are good options. Get the child's hands in motion with engaging textures.
Another option for touch is to allow the infant to play in nature. Squeeze mud, dig in dirt, splash water, pull up grass, pet animals, throw sand, finger paint with pudding. Anything that could make a safe mess would be a stimulating experience. Make sure play clothes are worn for the messier activities. - Taste many types of foods.funny eating baby girl image by Aleksey Kondratyuk from Fotolia.com
If the infant is already eating solids, a taste testing of baby food could be a part of the birthday activities. Remove the labels from different baby foods, or hide them in different containers. All party-goers can participate in tasting and guessing the mystery foods. The infant will enjoy tasting many flavors, and if old enough, identifying the whole food or a picture of the food.
Another choice is making an age-appropriate birthday cake. Keep in mind the infant's palate, preferences, and of course allergies. Several small cupcakes of different flavors would be a welcome treat. - Smell exotic or familiar fruits and flowers.marigold flowers and citrus fruits image by Maria Brzostowska from Fotolia.com
If smell stimulates the infant, prepare all fragrant types of foods, or use fragrant flowers as decoration and allow the infant to smell the interesting aromas. If using fruit, cut several kinds of fruit, ranging from the typical apple to the exotic star fruit, and let the infant explore the new scents.
