Winter capital of the state of Jammu and Kashmir, Jammu or Jammu-Tawi is the largest city of the state. The city has always been a dream destination for many in the country not only because it is a pilgrimage destination, but also as it is the northernmost state of India and nestled in the great Himalayan range. A city with a largely Hindu population, it is also known as the City of Temples as there are many temples and shrines in the region. Some of the popular religious destinations, shrines and temples include:
- Vaishno Devi Temple: At an altitude of 5300 feet, this temple is dedicated to Shakti or Mother Goddess. - Purmandal: Also called Chhota Kashi, Purmandal is located thirty five kilometres from Jammu city centre, and is dedicated to Lord Shiva.
- Raghunath Mandir: Right in the city centre, this temple was built between 1857 and 1860 by Maharaja Gulab Singh and his son Maharaja Ranbir Singh. The temple has seven shrines, each with a tower of its own.
- Shivkhori: This is a cave that has a natural rock formation of a Shivalinga.
- Pir Dastgir Sahib: A lovely monument, this shrine has wooden filigree work outside, and is definitely a sight to see.
- Shankaracharya Hill: This has been considered a sacred destination since 250 B.C. At the top of the hill is a Shiva temple.
Aside from the religious and spiritual getaways, some of the other beautiful sights to see in Jammu and Kashmir are:
- The Dal Lake: The most romantic lake known to India, complete with house boats, this is almost an iconic lake, particularly for older Bollywood movies.
The Dal Lake has some amazing views to offer as well, and you may feel like you cannot take enough pictures of this beautiful place!
- Shalimar Bagh: This famous garden was built by Jehangir for his wife Nur Jahan. There are other famous parks and gardens to see in the city as well.
- Sri Pratap Singh Museum: This museum is great to visit to see relics from Mughal and Kashmiri cultures.
- Pari Mahal: One of the most beautiful sights to see, particularly when it is well lit after dark. It is well landscaped, so a walk in the surrounding gardens during the day is also a good way to relax.
- Nandini wildlife sanctuary: Best known for the various species of pheasants that can be seen here, this is a great place to spot some wild animals.
