  A young science buff will enjoy a "mad science" theme at his birthday party. There are plenty of creative and entertaining options for mad science decorations and activities for the party. Adding the theme to the birthday cake helps integrate mad science from the beginning to the end of the party, whether you want to make your own cake or order it from a bakery.
  
  

Bubbling Beaker

• A bubbling beaker works well as the inspiration for a party cake. Stacking three or four round cakes gives you a base. Carve the cakes into a beaker shape. After icing the beaker cake, use additional icing to add measurement lines and other details to the beaker. To create the bubbling effect, make bubbles out of fondant or use cotton candy to simulate the effect.
  
  

Brain

• Make a brain cake to go along with the mad science theme. Baking the cake in a spherical pan or a Pyrex bowl gives it a shape to create a brain. You can also stack oval cakes and carve them to have a curved, brain-like top. Cover the cake in a smooth layer of icing first. To get the brain look, use an icing tip with a thick, round opening to cover the cake in swirly lines. You can also use fondant rolled into a long, thin snake to create the brain look.
  
  

Mad Scientist's Face

• A round cake works well to create a mad scientist's face. A specialty cake pan shaped like a clown's face can also be decorated to resemble a scientist. After the base frosting is on, add the facial details of the scientist. The crazier his features, the better. Curly hair sticking up all over also helps create the mad scientist look.
  
  

Lab

• A rectangular sheet cake works well to make the counter in a mad scientist's lab. If the cake is large enough, you can place real lab equipment such as petri dishes and small beakers on top of the cake. Always use new, clean materials so that you don't contaminate the cake.
