How to Install Crown Molding on a Vaulted Ceiling

    Finding The Angle

    • 1). Place a miter finder against the corner that you need to measure. The device will open and press against both sides.

    • 2). Tighten the nut in the center of the tool. This will hold the angle in place when you remove it from the wall.

    • 3). Place the miter finder on a scrap block of wood. The lip of the miter tool should overlap the factory cut edge.

    • 4). Trace along the miter edge beginning at point A, then to B and on to C. These points are marked on the miter finder. Do not move the miter finder or change the angle.

    • 5). Draw two arcs on the wood with the metal arms that are attached to the miter finder. Check to see if the two arcs intersect.

    • 6). Remove and close the miter finder.

    • 7). Align the flat edge of the miter finder to the two points on the wood. One is point C of the angle that you drew, the other the point where the two arcs intersect. Trace the flat edge to draw a line connecting the two points.

    • 8). Position the block of wood in the chop saw. Align the blade of the saw with the straight line you traced. Cut the wood in two pieces. This is the angle the saw needs to be set at to cut the crown molding for that corner.

    • 9). Place the wood against the wall. Check to be sure that the two pieces fit snugly together.

Find the correct angle, using the miter finder, for each angle of the wall.

    Cut The Crown Molding

    • 1). Measure the length of the wall where the first and second piece of crown molding will go. Measure from corner to corner. Mark the measurements on the crown molding.

    • 2). Cut the first and second piece of crown molding. Cut the two pieces using the same angle on the saw. One piece should have the excess to the right of the blade, and the other have the excess to the left of the blade. Position the two pieces on the wall to test the fit.

    • 3). Apply a line of construction adhesive to both of the flat sides and the cut edge on the crown molding. Press the flat sides against the ceiling and the side wall. Position the cut edges together to create a seam. Wipe away the construction adhesive.

    • 4). Reset the saw for each cut and continue working around the room.
