The Power of Self-Talk
In all my speaking engagements throughout 2005 one thing people always take home (according to the feedback forms) is the power of self-talk and the wheel of life.
I would now like to write about the power of self-talk and share with you the two things I used.
I was introduced to this concept by one of my teachers, Zig Ziglar, an American guru in self-development and I use his self-talk.
I often say that before you go out in the morning you must say something positive to yourself.
Some people call it affirmation but I call it the power of self-talk and what I say twice a day is I, (insert your name here), am an honest, intelligent, goal-oriented, organised, responsible, committed and punctual individual.
I am highly motivated, optimistic, enthusiastic, positive, focused and a self-starter.
I am decisive, competent, disciplined, persistent, knowledgeable, creative, resourceful team player who makes choices.
I am an emotional, intelligent, confident believer and an extra-miller.
I am energised, I have great self-control and a healthy self-image, and I manage my self well.
These are the qualities of the winner I was born to be and by using them every day, I will maintain my momentum and have employment security in a no-job security world.
These will also enable me to get more of the things money will buy and more of the things money won't buy.
Zig Ziglar said that research conclusively proves that your self-talk has a direct bearing on your performance.
Several times each day - especially before you start your day and the last thing you do at the end of each day - use this self-talk procedure.
He said, "Don't worry if you don't have all of those qualities when you start practising this self talk procedure.
The reality is that you have the seeds of all of them and when you consistently, consciously claim all those qualities, you will acquire and live up to them.
"Isn't that profound? I have been using this for four years until October 21, 2005, the day one of the richest men in Britain and retailing entrepreneur, Phillip Green, was paid an astronomical dividend.
He bought Arcadia Group, which comprises of Top Shop, Dorothy Perkins, Evan and Burtons, for £850million four years earlier.
On October 21, Arcadia paid out a dividend of £1.
3 million - of which £1.
2 million went straight to Philip Green!Since his family owns 92% of Arcadia, with HBOS holding the remainder, the Green share is £1.
2billion.
Whilst addressing top Arcadia executives, Green's banker, Peter Cummings of Bank of Scotland, a subsidiary of HBOS, said, "It is tough out there but I am absolutely confident that Arcadia will continue to be a winner" I have now adapted and added that line as the last sentence to my daily self talk to:"It's tough out there but I continue to be a winner.
" To me that last word is very symbolic because we now live in a very competitive and challenging world.
I remembered that I used it for the very first time when I spoke later that day at CLR Library in East London during the Black History Month for the London Borough of Lambeth and everybody loved it and requested a copy of it.
Two of my lovely friends Joan Jardine and Dr Beatrice Nabulya, a family planning expert, say this every morning during their work-out, "Every day in every way I'm getting better and better.
Everything is coming to me easily and effortlessly.
LOVE ...
is coming to me easily and effortlessly (whatever it is you desire).
HEALTH..
..
...
is coming to me easily and effortlessly.
COMPASSION...
is coming to me easily and effortlessly.
MONEY..
..
..
is coming to me easily and effortlessly.
WEALTH..
..
..
is coming to me easily and effortlessly.
HAPPINESS..
..
is coming to me easily and effortlessly.
So it is.
So be it" There is something to remember about self-talk.
Always state it in the present tense.
Hence it wrong to say 'I will be healthy.
Instead, say, 'I am strong and healthy.
' What this self-talk does for me is it that it enables meto be positive every day and, when faced with a challenging situation, I see it as an opportunity for growth, believing that this moment will pass away, that very soon my sorrow will turn to joy.
According to the law of expression, whatever is expressed is impressed.
Whatever you say to yourself or others is impressed deeply into your subconscious mind and is likely to become a permanent part of your personality.
So say positive words to your self every day and experience the difference! They might be as simple as, I am good at what I do.
I am happy.
I feel good.
I am confident.
I am enthusiastic.
I am positive and upbeat, I am patient.
I am kind.
I am well liked.
I am strong.
I am sophisticated.
I am highly respected and desired.
