Sant Pau del Camp Church Barcelona

106 62
Sant Pau del Camp is Barcelona's oldest church, a Benedictine monastery in the heart of Barcelona's multicultural El Raval district. One of El Raval's chief architectural treasures, Sant Pau del Camp Church is located just off Rambla del Raval on Carrer Sant Pau.

Sant Pau was founded in the late 9th Century. It was located outside the city, hence its name, Saint Paul of the Countryside. After the sacking of the city by Moorish invaders and other setbacks it was restored several times before it became protected by new city walls which now enclosed it safely within Barcelona.

Sant Pau preserves a beautiful Romaneseque facade with a portal framed by marble columns with ancient Visigothic capitals. The founder, Guifre II is buried in a tomb in the 14th Century chapter house. The 12th Century cloister has Moorish arches surrounding a pretty fountain.

The church offers a delightful glimpse into Barcelona's history. The handsome Romanesque architecture is a treat for anyone willing to delve into this corner of El Raval in search of ancient treasures.
