Inevitably, it seems, the 'I-have-made-its' eventually share their tips for their success (missing from their lists, of course, is that four-letter word, 'luck').
Richard Branson lists his top ten tips for business success as follows.
  1. Follow your dreams and just do it.
  2. Make a positive difference in the world.
  3. Believe in your ideas.
  4. Have fun and take care of your team.
  5. Don't give up.
  6. Make lots of lists.
  7. Get out there and do things.
  8. Learn to delegate.
  9. Prove your naysayers wrong.
  10. Do what you love, and have a sofa in the kitchen.
One of the fascinating things about this list is that, with a few minor exceptions, it (the list) could be applied to adding years to your life and life to your years.
People have been searching for eons for the meaning of success: the bookshops are filled with publications on the subject.
The key message contained in all of these masterpieces is that success consists of three things - knowing where you are, knowing where you want to be, and each day moving towards that hoped-for end in some way.
It follows, then, that age need not be a roadblock to success.
The sweet taste of success is available to anyone of any age.
Groucho Marx's observation aside; that growing old is something you do if you're lucky, Branson's list applied to living a longer, better life might look like this.
  1. Pursue your passion - do something you love doing.
  2. Make a difference - not only is it something you can do but also it is your responsibility.
  3. Believe in yourself - take pride about what you're doing.
  4. Have fun - enjoy yourself and laugh and smile often.
  5. Be determined - winners never quit and quitters never win.
  6. Challenge yourself - always have something to look forward to; list your goals and mark them off as you achieve them.
  7. Spend time with family - delegate and watch people grow.
  8. Do it - turn off the TV and get out there and do things.
  9. Edit out negativity - what others say about you is none of your business.
  10. KISS - you don't need much to make the most of this life.
