- 1). Remove all furniture from the room.
- 2). Step on the handle-release bar and lower the handle to the floor. The handle-release bar on most Bissell machines is located at the back near one of the wheels.
- 3). Remove the tank by lifting the handle and carrying it to the sink. Most Bissell tanks have a tank-in-tank design that has two separate compartments for the dirty waste water and the cleaning solution and water mixture.
- 4). Remove the lid by lowering the handle in the opposite direction. This will unlock it from the tank.
- 5). Fill the tank with cleaning solution up to the line that is indicated on the tank if there is no other cleaning solution dispenser on the machine.
- 6). Fill the tank with hot tap water.
- 7). Close the lid and lift the handle to lock it in place.
- 8). Put the tank back on the machine and lower the handle to lock it on the machine. Raise the machine handle from the floor.
- 9). Remove the SmartMix bottle from the side of the machine if your machine has one. Skip these steps if your machine does not have a SmartMix bottle. Most machines have a separate dispenser for cleaning solution.

Unscrew the cap on the bottom of the bottle. - 11
Fill the bottle with cleaning solution and close the cap. Slide the bottle back onto the machine. - 12
Plug the machine in and turn it on. Wait two minutes to allow the machine to heat up. - 13
Adjust the SmartMix setting to the appropriate mixture for the job you are performing. This also adjusts the amount of cleaning solution that you use. - 14
Press the trigger and push the machine forward over one area and back over the same area. This applies the cleaning solution and water and scrubs it into the carpet. - 15
Release the trigger and push the machine forward over one area back over the same area. This will activate the suction mechanism, which will suck up the dirty cleaning solution and water. - 16
Repeat this process over the entire carpet. Work backward through a room to prevent the machine from dripping over the clean rug. - 17
Refill the SmartMix bottle when the flow indicator cap stops spinning. This cap is located on the top of the foot of the machine. - 18
Refill the clean water tank when you notice that the machine is not spraying. Add cleaning solution to the tank if your machine does not have a SmartMix bottle. - 19
Turn off the machine when the dirty water tank is full. You will notice that it is full when it no longer is able to pick up cleaning solution. - 20
Remove the tank from the machine and remove the lid. Pour out the dirty water and cleaning solution by tipping the tank in the direction of the lip. - 21
Replace the lid and the tank and continue working until the entire carpet is clean. - 22
Let the carpet dry completely before putting the furniture back into the room. This could take up to several hours.
