We are all looking for ways to stay healthy.
Many of us do this by exercising regularly and eating healthy.
When we go on holiday we often view this vacation time as a time to escape our daily routines.
This may result in not exercising as much as we normally do, or breaking away from our habit of healthy eating.
Here are some tips to help you eat healthy when on your next vacation.
  • Pack a cooler - When travelling by car pack a cooler with an assortment of healthy foods such as fruits, nuts, yogurt, granola bars, cut up vegetables like celery and carrot sticks.
    When the urge to eat strikes you, pass by the McDonald's and Burger King that you see at every exit off the highway.
    Instead dive into your cooler for a healthy snack to ward of those hunger pangs.
    This is a healthier option that will also get you to your destination sooner, because there will be less stops on your journey.
  • Water - Take along a big bottle of water.
    If in your car put bottles of water in your cooler bag.
    If your trip includes flying go through security first and then purchase a bottle of water for your flight.
    Drinking water when flying is especially important.
    The pressurized airline cabins cause dehydration, so drink lots of water to maintain a healthy level of hydration.
  • Snacks on a plane - the rules for items you can take on airplanes have grown stricter.
    You can still take solid snacks like apples, trail mix, bananas and energy bars.
    All of those are better options than the salty snacks provided in flight.
    Another option, especially on longer flights, is to go through security and then purchase a healthy sandwich to take on to the plane.
  • Baby food - when flying baby formula and food, breast milk, and juice are allowed in reasonable quantities exceeding three ounces and are not required to be in the zip top bag.
    Declare these items for inspection at the checkpoint.
  • Airplane Supplied Meals on longer air flights many airlines still offer meals.
    In instances where meals are included with your flight request the vegetarian meal.
    Vegetarian meals tend to be lighter and healthier than their meaty counterparts.
  • Alcohol when flying on your vacation - resist the temptation to have an alcoholic beverage.
    Drinking alcohol during a flight seemingly doubles the strength of the alcohol; you will definitely feel intoxicated or woozy after drinking a small amount.
    The reason being is that body fluids evaporate quickly in the pressurized dry cabin of an airplane, and under this pressure, the alcohol absorbs more fluids in the intestinal tract and you feel the effects of the alcohol much more quickly.
    Instead of drinking alcohol on long flights when dehydration sets in, drink lots of water during the flight.
  • Hotels with kitchenettes - this is useful when adults are travelling or when travelling with kids and babies.
    If your hotel room has a fridge or microwave - on one of the first days of your vacation, hit the local supermarket and stock up on healthy basics you can keep and prepare right in your room.
    For example, we always start our day with a bowl of cereal, skim milk and some fruit.
    We purchase these items at the grocery store and have them available in our room.
    Even of the hotel room does not have a fridge, we always carry a small packable cooler bag with us, so we use that to keep our milk and water fresh and cool during our travels.
  • Eat a healthy breakfast - more and more hotels offer a continental breakfast or morning buffet.
    They have a wide range of choices, some healthy other choices not so healthy.
    Choose the fruits, cereals and yogurt, and resist the donuts and the calorie laden Danish.
Following these simple tips will help you to stay on a healthy track during your vacation.
Being healthy means having more energy to enjoy your vacation time.
