How to Use Trout Roe As Bait

    Using Trout Eggs for Bait

    • 1). Catch a female trout that you intend to keep. Club the fish on the head with a fish club to kill it.

    • 2). Make a shallow incision in the belly from the anal vent up to the gills. Don't cut too deep or you'll puncture the eggs.

    • 3). Gently pull the eggs from the fish. If the fish is not yet ready to spawn, the eggs will come out in two solid "skeins." If the fish is close to spawning, the eggs may come out individually.

    • 4). Fish with the fresh eggs immediately, or refrigerate them for up to two weeks. If you can't use them that quickly, preserve them in a brine mixture.

    • 5). Mix equal parts borax, pickling salt and sugar. Spread waxed paper over a cookie sheet. Sprinkle some of the brine over the waxed paper.

    • 6). Place the eggs on top of the brine. Sprinkle the remaining brine over the top of the eggs. Refrigerate and let stand for one hour.

    • 7). Gather loose eggs and place in a plastic freezer bag or plastic container with a lid. If the eggs are in skeins, cut the skeins into 1-inch chunks. Place in a container.

    • 8). Refrigerate the eggs for up to two weeks or freeze the eggs for up to a year.

    • 9). Put one teaspoon of eggs in a mesh spawn sac. Tie the bag shut with thread. Run your fish hook through the mesh bag. Cast your spawn sac into a likely fishing area.
