Will Applying Citronella Oil on the Deck Keep Flies Away?
- A natural oil extracted from varieties of lemon grass (Cymbopogon), citronella oil may be applied on the skin, on a cloth, rubbed on surfaces on a deck or patio or used in the manufacture of candles to help repeal unwanted insect pests, such as flies. The substance is obtained by steam distillation of the grass after it is freshly cut.
- Consider applying oil of citronella to outdoor decking or a patio using a spray bottle or moisten a cloth with the oil. The substance offers low acute toxicity so is safe to use around children or pets. The oil works well when misted or applied to a diffuser. It does dissipate quickly, and the deck area may require frequent misting every 20 to 30 minutes to keep pests away.
- Citronella oil was first registered in the United States as an insect repellent in 1948. It works as an insect repellent, wildlife repellent and insect feeding regulator.
