    • 1). Visit Making Home Affordable.gov, a federal website, and click "Eligibility" to take a quiz to determine if you may be eligible for a mortgage loan modification. If you do not have computer access, call 1-888-995-4673 for assistance.

    • 2). Click the "Find out if you are eligible" button and answer the yes or no questions on the quiz. Based on your responses, the website will state if you may be eligible for a loan modification.

    • 3). Call your mortgage lender or visit the section of its website that pertains to loan modifications to learn how to apply.

    • 4). Complete the application for a modification. The application will ask about your financial situation and tan explanation of your financial hardship. Gather supporting documentation, which will likely include recent tax forms, proof of income and bank statements.

    • 5). Submit copies of your application and supporting documentation to your mortgage lender via mail or fax. Your lender will contact you with its determination and offer you a temporary loan modification should you meet its criteria.
