Japanese journalist and gastronome extraordinaire Yamaoka Shiro is on a culinary quest for the "ultimate menu". On sale: January 13, 2009

To commemorate its 100th anniversary, the editors of Tozai Shimbun newspaper want to plan to publish the "Ultimate Menu." Journalist Yamaoka Shiro is sent to find these amazing dishes, and with the help of his female co-worker Kurita Yuko, Yamaoka will scour Japan to find dishes that are worthy of legendary status.

Oishinbo (also known as The Gourmet in other translations) is one of the longest-running manga ever published in Japan.

Since its debut in 1983 in the pages of seinen manga magazine Big Comic Spirits, Oishinbo has been collected in over 102 volumes.

Rather than attempt to publish all 102 volumes of this culinary comic, VIZ Media is publishing an "a la carte" menu of Oishinbo stories, with volumes focusing on various aspects of Japanese cuisine. The theme of the first volume is Nihon ryori, or traditional Japanese cuisine, and it features stories about the preparing perfect dashi (traditional broth made with seaweed and /or fish that provides the foundation of flavor for many dishes), matcha (powdered green tea used in tea ceremonies) and sashimi (sliced raw fish). Other mouth-watering volumes will cover the delicious details about sake, fish, vegetables, rice, noodles and izakaya, or pub food.
