How to File for an Extension of Federal Taxes Electronically
- 1). Access the proper form. In order to request an extension of federal taxes, you need to access and complete Form 4868. If you purchased a tax software package or hired a professional to prepare your taxes, refer to them for help accessing the form. Otherwise, visit IRS.gov and type "Free File" in the Search box to find companies online who will allow you to file your extension electronically.
- 2). Collect the appropriate information before filing your extension. You'll need a copy of your most recent tax return, which includes information that you'll need for taxpayer identification purposes. You should also be prepared to provide your official mailing address, your Social Security number, your spouse's Social Security number if filing jointly, and an estimate of taxes owed for the year.
- 3). Determine the amount you will pay. If you think you will owe on your federal taxes, you will need to pay at least a portion of the expected total. Your payment can range from $1 to the full amount. Otherwise, if you don't make at least a partial payment, you might be subject to penalty fees.
- 4). Complete Form 4868 to the best of your ability. This form is short and sweet, only 9 lines long, but must be completed in its entirety to avoid potential problems.
- 5). Submit Form 4868 electronically no later than April 15th. Once you complete the form, it's ready to be submitted to the federal government. You will receive a confirmation number; record that number in a safe place for future reference.
- 6). File your taxes within the allowed extension period, which is typically 6 months. If you attach a statement to your taxes showing a reasonable cause for your extension, you may be able to waive late payment fees or other penalties that come with late filing.
