    Online

    • 1). Go to the Internal Revenue Service's EIN service Web page. Read the introductory information and instructions before beginning the application process.

    • 2). Fill out the online application. You'll be asked to select a business entity (select the legal entity your business was registered as with your state), your reason for requesting the EIN, your name, your Social Security number, the name of the business and the business address.

    • 3). Click the "Submit" button to file your information with the Internal Revenue Service. You'll receive an EIN immediately. Print this sheet out and keep it with your business records.

    Over the Telephone

    • 1). Call the IRS' EIN telephone application filing system at 800-829-4933. The IRS allows you to file EIN applications by phone between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. in your local time zone Monday through Friday.

    • 2). Provide all requested information. You'll be guided through this process by an IRS representative, who will ask for your business entity (the legal entity your business was registered as with your state), your reason for requesting the EIN, your name, your Social Security number, the name of the business and the business address.

    • 3). Write down the EIN. Once your telephone application is complete, you'll be given your EIN immediately. Keep it in a safe location, ideally with your other business or tax records.

    Through the Mail

    • 1). Acquire IRS Form SS-4. You can get the form at the IRS website or order it by calling the IRS at 800-829-3676.

    • 2). Complete IRS Form SS-4. You'll asked to enter information about your business entity (select the legal entity your business was registered as with your state), your reason for requesting the EIN, your name, your Social Security number, the name of the business and the business address.

    • 3). Review and submit your paper application by mail after making a copy for your records. Mail your completed application to the IRS service center in your state. To get the address, call 800-829-4933.
