Can Raspberries Grow Near Black Walnuts?
- The black walnut tree produces a toxic chemical known as juglone. It damages or kills those plants growing under or near the tree, within range of its roots.
- Some plant species appear resistant to the effects of juglone from the black walnut tree. Black raspberries are one of these juglone-resistant plants, along with other vines and shrubs such as wisteria, clematis, weeping forsythia and Virginia creeper. Blueberries, blackberries and chokeberries do not survive near black walnut trees, however.
- Plant only black raspberries, or Rubus occidentalis, near black walnut trees. Keep all other raspberries out of range of the tree roots, anywhere from a 50- to 80-foot radius to a mature tree.
